Exciting secondment opportunities have arisen within the Content Team at the NFCC Central Programme Office. National Operational Guidance aims to provide a comprehensive up-to-date suite of guidance to services, based on good practice to help make our personnel safer and improve the response of the UK fire and rescue services. We are seeking applicants of competent Crew Manager or above for a 12-month fixed term secondment, based at London Fire Brigade Headquarters in Southwark. Purpose of the role: To support the development and maintenance of National Operational Guidance and support services to embed it in local policy and procedure.

Your role as a Content Officer:

Key requirements

We are looking for a professional and enthusiastic individual to help us achieve our drive to provide excellent service in everything that we do. As a member of the Content Team you will be responsible for gathering information from the UK fire and rescue services and the wider sector to ensure our guidance is maintained. You will work with subject matter experts to resolve feedback and recommendations from National Operational Learning, as well as completing periodic reviews of guidance. You will also be responsible for engaging with services and assisting them in embedding National Operational Guidance in their service, working with practitioners and strategic managers, to support their implementation and provide solutions to help ensure the UK fire and rescue services follow good practice. You will represent National Operational Guidance as a part of the Central Programme Office at NFCC user groups and governance meetings and engage with all stakeholders to ensure our products are of the highest quality.

You will also be responsible for making sure our guidance has fully captured all pre existing operational guidance from a variety of sources. A successful candidate will have experience of:

  • Writing fire service policy in plain English 
  • Working as part of a team 
  • Taking responsibility for large and complex pieces of work and delivering to deadlines A successful candidate will have an understanding of: 
  • The structures of the National Fire Chiefs Council 
  • The obligations and responsibilities of fire and rescue services
  • How legislation should be interpreted in UK fire and rescue services
  • Operational response of fire and rescue services

Desirable qualities include:

  •  Excellent spoken and written English 
  • Good communication skills
  • An ability to work with people from different sectors and different levels 
  • An ability to work proactively as part of a team and on individual responsibilities
  • An ability to deliver high quality work in a fast-paced, time pressured environment
  • Confidence to express their own view appropriately and constructively challenge people
  • An attention to detail
  • Experience working within project management structures
  • Experience organising and running meetings 
  • An understanding of how to keep track of legislative change and developments within the fire sector 
  • A detailed understanding of  National Operational Guidance
  • Flexibility of working patterns

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure all guidance is compliant and up-to-date
  • Monitor legislative change and recommendations from National Operational Learning
  • Manage relationships with fire and rescue services and external partners • Oversee the production of guidance and supporting documents based on evidence, ensuring accuracy and quality in all products
  • Provide advice to services on appropriate implementation and issues of policy and procedure
  • Represent the Central Programme Office at events and meetings
  • Review and approve content for publication
  • Identify opportunities to develop existing products 
  • Manage web platform
  • Respond to queries from services and external parties
  • Provide briefings of existing products and development work
  • Develop self and act as a role model for others

Have the ability to manage a team and to work under pressure including meeting deadlines and dealing with interruptions.
