About the role & About us

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is now recruiting for wholetime operational firefighters. Applications are open to competent transferee firefighters only.  Recruitment of external candidates and non-competent transferees will take place in Spring 2020, an advert for which will be available then for interest applicants to apply.

To be eligible as a competent transferee firefighter you must be currently serving in a UK Fire and Rescue Service on Grey Book conditions of service and successfully passed a final stage competency review. Wholetime, On-Call or MOD/Armed Forces that use the National Occupational Standards competency framework are all welcome to apply during this intake.

The Process

The recruitment process involves 3 stages and will be scored holistically throughout. (The score weightings of each stage are stated in brackets next to the stage heading).

  • Stage 1 - application 25%
  • Stage 2 - practical assessment 50%
  • Stage 3 - interview 25%

Stage 1 - application (25%). Personal Qualities and Attributes (PQA's) evidence and supporting personal statement (self-reflection) will be assessed. The top 60 scorers will progress to Stage 2.

Stage 2 - practical assessment (50%). Personal Qualities and Attributes (PQA’s) will be tested in a practical environment. This will consist of a full day of practical activities and exercises, further details will be provided on completion of stage 1 to candidates progressing to this stage (12 candidates per day – 24th February 2020 to 28th February 2020). Scores from the day will be added to the application scores and the top 20 candidates will proceed to Stage 3.

Stage 3 - interview (25%). The formal interview will consist of 4 knowledge and skills based questions relating to firefighter NOS (national occupational standards), NOG (National Operational Guidance) and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service. Interviews will take place during the week Monday 2nd March 2020 to Friday 5th March 2020.

About the application - Stage 1

About the practical day - Stage 2

Practical assessment of PQA's will take place during the week Monday 24th February 2020 and Friday 28th February 2020. PQA’s will be assessed in a practical environment throughout the day. PQA’s assessed at this stage are Commitment to Diversity & Integrity, Situational Awareness, Working with Others, Effective Communication, Confidence & Resilience and Commitment to Excellence as well as Cornwall Council and Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service Core Values and Code of Conduct.

Further information will be provided to candidates reaching this stage after completion of stage 1.

About the interview - Stage 3

The formal interviews will take place during the week Monday 2nd March 2020 to Friday 5th March 2020 and will consist of 4 knowledge and skills based questions relating to firefighter national occupational standards, national operational guidance and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service aims, objectives and priorities.

Please Note:

  • The proposed intake of successful candidates will be in two tranches to start in April 2020 and April 2021.
  • An 11 day bespoke training conversion course will be provided prior to starting.
  • The role is operational and hence non-operational personnel, Green Book employees or personnel from Critical Control are not eligible to apply.
  • To be eligible to apply you must be able to meet the criteria as identified in the role profile and not be under any current disciplinary sanction.
