Leadership Project Executive and Board Members

Leadership Project Executive and Board Members

A number of Chief Fire Officers (CFOs) had a great conversation recently about various aspects of leadership and how we keep improving and challenging ourselves to strengthen leadership at all levels.  All CFOs are keen to support this debate with seven of us acting as representatives to set up a workshop to further develop ideas and then move to establish a Project Board to oversee the work needed under the Leadership area. The Leadership Project currently reports directly into the People Programme Board but we feel a dedicated project and board will bring greater drive, scrutiny and influence in this area.

The NFCC People Strategy 2017-2022 sets out a clear vision for our leaders of the future and leadership has featured much in the recent inspection outcomes and the government’s agenda for workforce reform. There is significant scope to the work and this is now matched with an appetite for change along with a range of challenges to overcome.

It is an exciting time to get involved with this piece of work and already the national dialogue is building momentum. The Project Board will have clear opportunities to shape the direction and influence that dialogue. We are looking for others to join the seven of us who come from different professional perspectives and from across the UK fire and rescue service with significant personal networks who have an interest in how the fire and rescue service can modernise, diversify and strengthen its leadership.

Ideally you will have a strong interest and experience of delivering leadership programmes or cultural change within your own fire and rescue service. Board members will also include external members who will bring crucial expertise from the wider sector and HR industry.

The Project Executive, would be accountable for the project, ensuring it meets its objectives and delivers the defined outputs. They would need to have drive and energy to lead the Project Board.

You will be familiar with the NFCC Leadership Framework and may have contributed to its development. The areas of focus for the project currently are around identifying and nurturing talent through the organisation and the specific workstreams supporting this are:

  • Core learning pathways
  • Succession planning
  • Recruitment toolkit
  • 360-degree feedback

The full scope of the project is yet to be established and the Project Board would be instrumental in this activity but may include areas such as development schemes, direct entry routes, fast tracking, mentoring and secondment schemes. The Project Board will also consider the role of professional standards will play within leadership working with the Fire Standards Board.

The Project Board will meet quarterly and the Project Executive will be required in preparations for meetings. The CPO will coordinate project work and provide secretarial support for the Board.
