The Vision 20/20 project in the United States of America and the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) are joining together in a partnership to examine International good practices in community risk reduction (IRMP and devolved equivalents). It is evident that the international fire sector has much to learn from one another about good practices in risk management planning adopted globally. Following enagement with the Vision 20/20 project through the NFCC Community Risk Programme, there is an appetite for a modest but important international meeting of key representatives from around the world over two days in September 2019.

The symposium’s objectives are to:

1. Explore good practice in;

  • Emergency operations
  • Fire service based Emergency Medical Services
  • Data collection and analysis for risk assessments and planning
  • Prevention based activities
  • Protection activities

2.  Determine common elements that lead to successful community risk reduction activities.

3. Involve the active partnership of representatives from nations and organisations committed to the concept of Community Risk Reduction.

Over the two days delegates will spend time looking for the common elements that lead to success whatever the context or risk issue. The format will be mixed, which will include:

  • Presentations,
  • Case studies,
  • Panels
  • Interactive discussions and participation

All will be around exploring good practice in the areas of:

  • Emergency operations.
  • Protection based strategies.
  • Fire service Emergency Medical Services.
  • Data collection and analysis.
  • Risk assessments and planning.

With the NFCC currently embarking on its Community Risk Programme, this symposium comes at an important time for the UK fire sector which we intend to be a meaningful and inspiring experience, filled with activity devoted to the topics at hand.

Ultimately, the symposium will provide a framework and report that can encourage the exhange of community risk reduction best practices internationally on a regular basis which may lead to future endeavors, where we may collectively take advantage of our experiences for the common good. If this formative meeting is successful, and we believe it will be, we will seek to establish a regularly scheduled event that is rotated among participating nations to gain true international perspectives.
