Faith guide launch during Inter Faith Week

An updated guide has this week been launched this week to increase awareness of some of the cultures which make up modern communities in the UK. Fire and Rescue Services recognise and appreciate the rich and diverse faiths of the communities in Britain as well as the invaluable contribution they collectively make to their neighbourhoods and to wider society.

This week Inter Faith Week takes place from Sunday 11 th to Sunday 18 thNovember, it is run and supported by the Inter Faith Network.  The network promotes understanding, cooperation and good relations between organisations and persons of different faiths in the UK.  The key aims of Inter Faith Week are to:

  • Strengthen good inter faith relations at all levels
  • Increase awareness of the different and distinct faith communities in the UK, in particular celebrating and building on the contribution which their members make to their neighbourhoods and to wider society
  • Increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious beliefs

Building upon the previous work of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service the update was helped by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and came togther under NFCC's Equility, Diveristy and Inclusion group. The document is called Religion, belief and culture in our community guide was also supported by the Interfaith Network, World Congress of Faith and the University of Central Lancashire.

Roy Wilsher, Chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, said:

“The National Fire Chiefs Council is committed to diversity across the UK Fire and Rescue Service and we have a national committee which focuses on our workforce. The fire service is accessible to everyone - regardless of gender, background and ethnicity; it is essential we understand the diverse communities we serve and have a workforce which reflects this.

To support this we are involved in a number of national initiatives to continuously build on increasing diversity and helping to transform fire services in the future.”

The guide has been launched during interfaith week and will be a useful resource to help understanding of the diverse community we live in.
