BA Telemetry

BA Telemetry

In 2010 research indicated that there was a possibility of interference with the telemetry component of breathing apparatus (BA) when a mobile handset, dongle or other 4G mobile device was used within a certain distance.

In order to address this concern, CFOA led a BA Telemetry Working Group which included representatives from key stakeholders; Fire and Rescue Services (FRS), the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and supported by Ofcom. The aim was to get a better understanding of the practical implications and identify a long term solution.

The group recommended a twin-track approach: comprising of a ‘re-tune’ of existing telemetry equipment starting in early 2013, whilst at the same time securing an alternative frequency in exclusively licensed spectrum. This solution has been endorsed by the Fire Sector and a business case for funding, which supports the recommendation, has been submitted to DCMS and approved.

As part of this work, the following reports were commissioned which assessed the risk of degrading BA telemetry as a safety measure for firefighters and have helped to inform the recommendation.
